    Indian Engineering Services 2014 ( IES 2014 ) Entrance Examination for Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Communication Engineering Graduate Freshers Notification and Details

    INDIAN ENGINEERING SERVICES (IES) 2014 ENTRANCE EXAM will be conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on 20th June, 2014 and it is 3 day long process. The application form and notifications will be released on 15th March, 2014 and the last date for applying for IES 2014 entrance Exam is 14th April, 2014. The entrance Exam of IES is conducted once in a year. Indian Engineering Service (IES) exam primarily constitutes of Engineers who work for or under Government Of India.     • The candidate must be an Indian Citizen, subject to Nepal and Bhutan.
    • Tibetan refugee candidates shifted their base to India before 1st January, 1962.
    • The candidates of Indian origin migrated from neighbour counties like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Burma and East African Countries of Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, Vietnam etc.
    • For the candidates of subject to Nepal, Bhutan , Tibetan refugee and migrated are required to submit a “Certificate Of Eligibility” issued by the Government Of India.
    • The candidate applying for IES 2014 Entrance Exam must have attained age of 21 years but should not be older than 30 years.

    APPLICATION FORM AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURE OF IES 2014 ENTRANCE EXAM: For availing the application form of IES 2014 the candidates have to visit the UPSC official website and go to UPSC online application link and click on the form then the candidate needs to fill all the information asked in the form. It is advisable to the candidates that they submit only the single application. The registration for IES 2014 Entrance Exam has to be made online only although the payment can be made inonline and offline modeThe online mode is related to making transaction through online gateways and Offline mode is related to making payment at any branch of SBI bank. APPLICATION FEE OF IES 2014 ENTRANCE EXAM:

    • The fee for application form for the General Category and OBC category student is Rs. 200 where as,
    • Candidates of SC, ST, PH, female are exempted from paying the application fee.
    • The payment of application fee can be made in online and offline modes and no other mode can be used by the candidates.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE OF IES 2014 ENTRANCE EXAM: The selection procedure for IES 2014 Entrance Exam is not very rigorous and it only involves two steps, the first step is the written examination and the second step is Personality or Personal Interview of the shortlisted candidates. FOLLOWING ARE THE BASIS OF IES 2014 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A) NATIONALITY:

    1. The candidates applying for IES 2014 must either be an Indian Citizen or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan.
    2. Tibetan refugee who made India is his/her permanent base before January 1st, 1962.
    3. A person or candidate of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Vietnam, Ethiopia etc also fall under the IES 2014 Eligibility Criteria.
    4. The candidate mentioned in 2nd, 3rd and with subject to Nepal and Bhutan have to produce acertificate of eligibility issued by the Government Of India till the certificate is not produced there admission will be on temporary basis.

    B) AGE LIMIT:

    1. The minimum age attained by the candidate is 21 years and the candidate must not be more than 30 years.
    2. The candidate must fall in the age bracket of 21 to 30 years on 1st August of the year of examination.
    3. The upper age limit is 30 but is relaxed in case of Government servants and has been increased to 35 years but the candidate has to be an employee of any department or office under any authority like Railway Department, Central Public Works Department, Military Engineer Service department etc in order to fall in the eligibility criteria of IES 2014.

    C). EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS OR QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. A candidate must have an Engineering degree from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central Government or State Legislature in India.
    2. The candidate must have passed section A & B of the institutes or University examination.
    3. The candidate must have passed a Graduate Membership examination of the institute of electronic and Telecommunication of India OR Obtained a degree/ diploma in Engineering from such foreign institute/ university and under such condition as may be recognizable in the eye of Government for the purpose from time to time OR passed Associate Membership examination part II and III/ Sections A and B of the Aeronautical society of India OR passed graduate Membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959 are required to be in the eligibility criteria of IES 2014.

    D). PHYSICAL STANDARDS: The candidates applying must be physically and mentally fit as per the physical standards laid by UPSC with regard to the eligibility criteria of IES 2014.

    IES 2014 Application Form

    Procedural steps to be followed for making the IES 2014 Application Form:

    1. The IES 2014 Application form will be made available in the online mode and  has to be filled online, for that the candidate has to go to the official website of UPSC or candidate can click on the tab mentioned above.
    2. If the candidates is filling the application form through UPSC official website the candidate will have to go the link of UPSC online application on the left side of the website or if the candidate clicks on the above tab then it will redirect candidate straight to the application form.
    3. As when the candidate is on the application Form, the candidate will realize there are lot information that has to be filled by the candidate and also there is block in which the candidate has fix the scanned photograph and at the end of the form the candidate also has to upload the scanned signature.
    4. All the information must be filled carefully by the candidate and should be according to the class Xth and XIIth passing certificates.
    5. After the candidate has followed the above mentioned steps then the candidate must choose either of the option of making payment. Online and Offline payment options are available to the candidates.
    6. Once the candidate has made payment through either modes the candidates must click on the Submit button and as soon as the form is submitted by the candidate a registration id and password will be generated which has to be used by the candidates for future references like download of admit card, result, scorecard etc.

    MODES OF PAYMENT: The application Form fee for SC, ST and Female candidate is not applicable i.e there are exempted from the payment of application fee where as, the candidates belonging to General Category and OBC Category is Rs. 200 and the amount can be made in the following modes: A). ONLINE MODE OF PAYMENT: In Online mode the candidate has to choose the online payment option and payment can be made through visa/ master credit card, debit card or net banking facility of SBI, State Bank Of Bikaner & Jaipur, State Bank Of Hyderabad, State Bank Of Mysore, State Bank Of Patiala, State Bank Of Travancore. The candidate must fill in all the bank details very carefully. B). OFFLINE MODE OF PAYMENT: In Offline mode the candidate has to make payment in cash and the candidate making payment through offline mode can make payment through E-slip which is generated when the candidate opts for offline payment and go to State Bank Of India and make payment and also candidate must not forget to take the student copy of payment receipt. NOTE: While making payment for IES 2014 application form the candidates must be alert as fee once paid will not be refunded also the payment has to made in the prescribed modes only otherwise the payment will not be accepted. FOLLOWING IS THE DETAILED AND ELABORATE IES 2014 SYLLABUS: A) ENGLISH AND GENERAL STUDIES SYLLABUS FOR IES 2014: The English section in IES 2014 exam is basically designed is such a manner that it is able to test the candidates knowledge about the subject and candidates proficiency in the subject.

    1. Reading Comprehension
    2. Jumbled Sentence
    3. Fill in the blanks
    4. Sentence Correction
    5. Finding errors and omittions
    6. Cohesion in extended text etc.

    Where as, the General awareness sections deals with the day to day affairs of the country. This section syllabus cannot be defined OR prescribed as it is something with the candidates ability of reading and in this case the more he/she reads the more chances of the candidates to perform well in the particular section. B) CIVIL ENGINEERING SYLLABUS OF IES 2014: Paper I 1. BUILDING MATERIALS Timber: Different types and species of structural timber, density-moisture relationship, strength in different directions, defects, influence of defects on permissible stress, preservation, dry and wet rots, codal provisions for design, Plywood. Bricks: Types, Indian Standard classification, absorption, saturation factor, strength in masonry, influence of morter strength on masonry strength. Cement: Compounds of, different types, setting times, strength. Cement Mortar: Ingredients, proportions, water demand, mortars for plastering and masonry. Concrete: Importance of W/C Ratio, Strength, ingredients including admixtures, workability, testing for strength, elasticity, non-destructive testing, mix design methods. 2. SOLID MECHANICS Elastic constants, stress, plane stress, Mohr s circle of stress, strains, plane strain, Mohr s circle of strain, combined stress; Elastic theories of failure; Simple bending, shear; Torsion of circular and rectangular sections and simple members. 3. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Analysis of determinate structures – different methods including graphical methods. Analysis of indeterminate skeletal frames – moment distribution, slope-deflection, stiffness and force methods, energy methods, Muller-Breslau principle and application. Plastic analysis of indeterminate beams and simple frames – shape factors. 4. DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES Principles of working stress method. Design of connections, simple members, Built-up sections and frames, Design of Industrial roofs. Principles of ultimate load design. Design of simple members and frames. 5. DESIGN OF CONCRETE AND MASONRY STRUCTURES Limit state design for bending, shear, axial compression and combined forces. Codal provisions for slabs, beams, walls and footings. Working stress method of design of R.C. members. Principles of prestressed concrete design, materials, methods of prestressing, losses. Design of simple members and determinate structures. Introductions to prestressing of indeterminate structures. Design of brick masonry as per I.S. Codes. 6. CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE, PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT Concreting Equipment: Weight Batcher, Mixer, vibrator, batching plant, concrete pump. Cranes, hoists, lifting equipment. Earthwork Equipment: Power shovel, hoe, dozer, dumper, trailers and tractor, rollers, sheep foot rollers, pumps. Construction, Planning and Management: Bar chart, linked bar chart, work-break down structures, Activity – on – arrow diagrams. Critical path, probabilistic Activity durations; Event-based networks. PERT network: Time-cost study, crashing; Resource allocation. Paper II 1 A. FLUID MECHANICS, OPEN CHANNEL FLOW, PIPE FLOW Fluid Properties, Pressure, Thrust, Buoyancy; Flow Kinematics; Integration of flow equations; Flow measurement; Relative motion; Moment of momentum; Viscosity, Boundary layer and Control, Drag, Lift; dimensional Analysis, Modelling; Cavitation; Flow oscillations; Momentum and Energy principles in Open channel flow, Flow controls, Hydraulic jump, Flow sections and properties; Normal flow, Gradually varied flow; Surges; Flow development and losses in pipe flows, Measurements; Siphons; Surges and Water hammer; Delivery of Power Pipe networks. 1 B. HYDRAULIC MACHINES AND HYDROPOWER Centrifugal pumps, types, performance parameters, scaling, pumps in parallel; Reciprocating pumps, air vessels, performance parameters; Hydraulic ram; Hydraulic turbines, types, performance parameters, controls, choice; Power house, classification and layout, storage, pondage, control of supply. 2 A. HYDROLOGY Hydrological cycle, precipitation and related data analyses, PMP, unit and synthetic hydrographs; Evaporation and transpiration; Floods and their management, PMF; Streams and their gauging; River morphology; Routing of floods; Capacity of Reservoirs. 2 B. WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING Water resources of the globe: Multipurpose uses of Water: Soil-Plant-Water relationships, irrigation systems, water demand assessment; Storages and their yields, ground water yield and well hydraulics; Waterlogging, drainage design; Irrigation revenue; Design of rigid boundary canals, Lacey s and Tractive force concepts in canal design, lining of canals; Sediment transport in canals; Non-Overflow and overflow sections of gravity dams and their design, Energy dissipators and tailwater rating; Design of headworks, distribution works, falls, cross-drainage works, outlets; River training. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING 3 A. WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Sources of supply, yields, design of intakes and conductors; Estimation of demand; Water quality standards; Control of Water-borne diseases; Primary and secondary treatment, detailing and maintenance of treatment units; Conveyance and distribution systems of treated water, leakages and control; Rural water supply; Institutional and industrial water supply. 3 B. WASTE WATER ENGINEERING Urban rain water disposal; Systems of sewage collection and disposal; Design of sewers and sewerage systems; pumping; Characteristics of sewage and its treatment, Disposal of products of sewage treatment, streamflow rejuvenation Institutional and industrial sewage management; Plumbing Systems; Rural and semi-urban sanitation. 3 C. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT Sources, classification, collection and disposal; Design and Management of landfills. 3 D. AIR AND NOISE POLLUTION AND ECOLOGY Sources and effects of air pollution, monitoring of air pollution; Noise pollution and standards; Ecological chain and balance, Environmental assessment. 4 A. SOIL MECHANICS Properties of soils, classification and interrelationship; Compaction behaviour, methods of compaction and their choice; Permeability and seepage, flow nets, Inverted filters; Compressibility and consolidation; Shearing resistance, stresses and failure; soil testing in laboratory and in-situ; Stress path and applications; Earth pressure theories, stress distribution in soil; soil exploration, samplers, load tests, penetration tests. 4 B.     • Upto a maximum of three years is relaxed in the case of OBC candidates in relation to IES 2014 Reservation Of Seats.
    • Upto a maximum of of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the state of Jammu and Kashmir during the period ranging from 1st January, 1980 to 31st December, 1989.
    • Upto a maximum of three years for Defence Service Personnel disable in operations during hostility.
    • The IES 2014 Reservation Of seats are also made for ex-servicemen including commissioned Officer and ECOs/SSCOs who have atleast rendered 5 years military service is upto maximum of three years,
    • Upto a maximum of five years is relaxed in the case of ECOs/ SSCOs and have completed an initial period of five years of Military services.
    • The candidate in whose case Ministry of Defence has issued the certificate and the upper age limit has been extended beyond five years.
    • Upto a maximum of 10 years in case of deaf mute and orthopaedically handicapped candidates.

    According to previous analysis of IES exam the number of vacancies filled on the basis of result were 763 including 19 PH candidates.

    WITH THE HELP OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS IES 2014 ONLINE REGISTRATION CAN BE MADE:

     

    • To make Online Registration for IES 2014 the candidates can either click on the blue tab mentioned above or visit the UPSC official website.
    • The candidates can avail the application form either on the UPSC official website or directly by clicking the tab mentioned above.
    • The candidates have to fill all the details in the application form, the information pertains to candidates personal, academic and professional backgrounds.
    • The candidate while making Online registration for IES 2014 the candidate must not forget to upload the scanned picture and signature as without uploading them the registration process is incomplete.
    • After all this the candidate has to make payment which can be made in online and offline modes. In online modes the candidate can opt for online gateways like credit card, debit card or net banking while in offline mode the candidate has to make payment in cash by depositing E slip that is generated as an when the candidate opts for Offline payment.
    • After submission of the form a unique id and password will be generated that has to be noted by the candidate and used for further references.

     

    BELOW IS THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF IES 2014 SELECTION PROCEDURE:

     

    A). WRITTEN TEST/ EXAM: The written test for IES 2014 will be conducted on 20th June, 2014 for which the application form will be released from 15th March, 2014 till 14th April, 2014. The registration for IES will be made online only but the candidate has the liberty of making payment in online and offline mode.The written test basically consists of two papers, paper 1 is English and General Awareness and this is anmandatory paper that every candidate appearing for the exam has to give and the paper 2 is an optional paper and every candidate has to choose one option from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics and telecommunication engineering and these papers are calledconventional papers where the paper 1 or section 1 will have objective type questionsThere will be negative marking as well and for every incorrect answer one- third mark will be deducted.

     

    B) PERSONAL INTERVIEW: The second step in the IES 2014 selection procedure is personality test or personal interview conducted by IES officials for the shortlisted candidates and before the personal interview the candidate also has to submit the necessary documents for the verification. In this round thecandidate has to face the panel consisting of esteemed and learned people which diagnose and scrutinize the candidate on various parameters and this round is conducted for total of 200 marks.

     

    After the above steps of IES 2014 selection procedure is conducted the candidates are made allotment in the above mentioned categories and following are the important documents that the candidate has to submit for the verification:
